The Vision of SGC (Part 7 - We Serve the Needy)

Posted in Life in the Church, Mission, Service, Vision

As we've said, our church vision statement isn't particularly short or pithy, but it does capture the heartbeat of Sovereign Grace Church. We believe this summarizes a lot of what God reveals about what a church is to be, and what our church in particular is to be:

We are a community of believers in Jesus Christ that seeks to be gospel-centered, Bible-saturated, and Spirit-empowered as we worship God, love one another, grow as disciples, serve the needy, and evangelize the lost.

In this post we want to think about what it means that we serve the needy.

Serve the Needy

One of the sobering truths about being a Christian is that God wants us to care for the world around us. We are to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matt. 22:37) and to be Good Samaritans to the wounded and broken around us (Luke 10:29-37). That means that growing as disciples is not only about our growth. A commitment to discipleship is a commitment to being "salt" and "light" in the earth, and it means letting "your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven" (Matt. 5:13-16).

A key way this happens at SGC is by the involvement of our members in ministries in the greater-Raleigh area like Hand of Hope, With Love from Jesus, Western Wake Crisis Center, Operation Christmas Child, and others. Through involvement like this in our communities we become a means for God's love to be experienced and not merely heard, to be encountered and not merely preached. Of course, we believe in proclaiming Christ verbally because that is how people are saved. But we also desire to be a people that serve the needy.
