Discipleship

• John McLeod • Posted in Bible, Devotions, Discipleship

As we approach a new year, many of you may be considering a fresh start with your Bible reading. I encourage you to take an honest look at your own spiritual disciplines, and to look for fresh ways to know God better through his Word. Remember that in order to worship God in spirit and truth, we need to know God accurately through his Word.

My testimony isn't spectacular in that one life altering event happened that altered the course of my life. My testimony hinges on the fact that the God of the universe was faithful throughout my life to put me in just the right place at just the right time that I might be able to encounter him in just the right way.

My name is Joy Sasser, and I was one of the 32 from SGC that recently ventured down to Agua Viva Children’s Home in Guatemala. Speaking for the team is tough because everyone took something different away from the experience and of what God did through us and in us. There are a few things I can confidently say from the group.

Josh Blount is a pastor at Living Faith Church in Franklin, WV, one of our sister churches. He wrote an article for the Sovereign Grace blog about Why Martin Luther Would Love Children's Ministry.

Daniel Garner did an excellent job in our men’s meeting last month. He gave a powerful testimony of God’s transformation in his life, bringing him from a fairly clueless single to a man who could lead a sizable family and do it fruitfully.

Someone asked me for a list of Old Testament prophecies fulfilled by Jesus. I expected the search to be a fairly easy one in our digitized society, but it wasn't. Here is a good list of the Old Testament prophecy followed by a New Testament fulfillment. It comes from R.A. Torrey, who died in 1928. The sheer length of this list reminds us that Christ is thoroughly (though not completely) revealed in the Old Testament, and that he is precisely who Peter said that he was: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matt. 16:16).

If you had the privilege of attending the men’s meeting on Saturday, February 22, then you were treated to a wonderfully edifying and challenging message by Daniel Garner as he shared lessons he has learned over the decades from being a husband, father, and leader in his family.

Cheryl Teal wrote this review of Ed Welch's Running Scared for her blog, and I asked if we could use it for ours. She does an excellent job of capturing the essence of the book in a way that explains, encourages, and edifies.

Cassie Sasser told me about this letter from Joel Beeke to a 12 year old on his birthday. It's great fatherly counsel from a man of God to a future man of God.

It's a big deal to join a church. It's a statement that we need others and that we are not alone as we live our Christian life. It's a commitment to partner with a group of Christians as we love God and love the fallen world around us.
