Advent and 10 Prophecies Fulfilled by Jesus

Christmas is a great chance to revisit the gospel in our personal Bible study and also with our families. There are a lot of ways to do this, but one way is to look at prophecies in the Old Testament that are fulfilled by Jesus. This helps us to see how God's gospel ("good news") came to us in Jesus Christ.

Here are ten prophecies that you can look at to reflect once again on the marvel of our salvation coming to us through a baby born in a manger:

  1. Jesus was born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2; Matt. 2:1-12)
  2. Jesus is Immanuel (Isa. 7:11; Matt. 1:18-25)
  3. Jesus was the Son of David (2 Sam. 7:12-13; Matt. 1:1)
  4. Jesus was the Son of Abraham (Gen. 22:17-18; Matt. 1:1)
  5. Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit (Isa. 61:1; Luke 4:18-19)
  6. Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey to save us (Zech. 9:9; Matt. 21:1-5)
  7. Jesus died as our substitute and took our sins away, so that we could be counted as righteous (Isa. 52:13-53:12; 1 Peter 2:21-25; Matt. 26:27-28; Matt. 8:16-17)
  8. Jesus was forsaken by the Father (Psa. 22:1; Matt. 27:46)
  9. Jesus died on the cross but had no bones broken (Psa. 34:20; John 19:34-36)
  10. Jesus rose from the dead (Psa. 16:8-10; Acts 2:25-36)

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
